commitment

I came across a quote by author and management expert, Ken Blanchard, that I really liked and wanted to share...."There is a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results." That quote meshes well with a chapter in John Maxwell's book, The 17 Essential Qualities OF A Team Player, titled "Committed: There Are No Halfhearted Champions". As coaches, we approach a new school year that is filled with promise, and with a great team mix of improving upperclassmen and talented youngsters. We're excited about the continued development of all, old and new!

As you begin to fill your bags and boxes and containers for your return to school, we encourage you to bring more commitment than ever. More commitment than to just the big things, like aerobic development, sleep, and nutrition. Be committed to all the small things that ultimately play vital roles in the success of your and our season. Be committed to core work, hip strength and mobility, iron supplementation, technique work, teamwork, and our Sunday long run practices.

Be committed to excellence in everything. That's what it takes.

  1. 62 this week. Long run and fartlek felt better this week than all summer. Friday's tempo was a bit tougher with the heat and humidity, but I still hit my pace.

I had my first trail dive of the summer today. Other than that, I've had a great summer so far; no major injuries or setbacks to my plan. *knock on wood*

  2. 58 miles. Sure wish it would cool down, I hate feeling sluggish because of the humidity. Otherwise I am excited to return to Tech and train with the team again. Running alone every day is getting.. ummm.. lonely

  5. 50. Felt tired at the beginning of the week, but began to feel more fresh in time for a good tempo run, especially in the heat. 7.5 @ 5:45. Feel stronger and definitely ready for a change of running environment. Hope they give me time to run at FASET this weekend...

  6. 55 for the week. Had a rough long run on Sunday, but made up for it with a solid fartlek and the best tempo of the summer(7 in 40:42). Had the pleasure of running my tempo with coach also, or more so trying to lap him on the lake loop haha.

P.s. Shawn, I wasn't on top of my game this week...I got you next week.

Looking forward to a great week of running before heading back up. Hope everyone is doing well, and has a safe trip back. See you all soon!!!!!

  10. 52 this week and 52 last week, both weeks felt great, wish it would cool down and the humidity would die down. It looks like I am getting out of the pool every time I finish running.

  14. 50 in 6 days, I had a tough time earlier in the week and i realized I hadn't had a day off in 3+ weeks so my legs definitely needed a rest. My tempo was felt pretty good though.

  15. 52. Felt alright. It's been a lot cooler up in New York than it is down there so I haven't really had problems with the heat. I'm hoping that doesn't change in about 10 days or so.

  19. In my 5 year tenure here I have never missed a blog post till last week... I am more than disappointed with myself...

Last week pretty awful. Aches and pains and feeling really fatigued. Hopefully things will turn around some this week.

  24. Week of July31-August6: 41miles in 6days... most of my miles were logged on the same road but on one run with a runner from Vermont we did 2.5 down sope creek, 3mile loop at river, then a mile flat and fast to segway into a hard climb back up through sope creek trails... legs were tired but Very worth it...
Today was the first time that I have ever run more than 12 so I decided to cap it at exactly 13.1 =) fun stuff

  26. 55. Had a down week. Long run was average, tempo poorly paced and easy days didn't feel easy enough. Hopefully I'll turn things around this week.

  28. 60 miles of surgically precise excellence with the regular guys. Humidity and heat plagued both the long run at the river Sunday as well as the fartlek on the cinder loop Tuesday. Yet, efforts were maintained through the muddy-gravel slosh. When the weather improved Friday morning, the sensational trio (mark, cam, joe) dominated the lovely lake loop with a conservative 80% 7mi in 40:42. Coach, inspired by the chariots of fire-like scene, reportedly threw down his own 5 mile loop-scorching tempo.

  29. 67 last week. Had a good fartlek and while I wasn't able to have a structured tempo due to travel, I did manage to do a hilly 9 miler at about 6:10 pace. It may not have been quite 80% as it felt pretty easy but it was a nice effort nonetheless.
