reflections

After a great weekend of championship racing, I'm all packed up and ready to head home tomorrow.  With the end of the season I can't help but reflect on what a great 2013-14 it was.  So much progress was made and some great accomplishments were achieved.  And the stage is set for an even better next year.  So many of you are fully engaged in your development as athletes, and make no mistake how important your continued commitment is!  As coaches, we are impressed.

As your mileage continues to build, make sure you following the strength & conditioning suggestions in your annual plans.  The various circuits, including the mobility, along with a continued emphasis on recovery will go along way towards keeping you healthy and headed in the right direction.

Keep it up!

  7. 33 last week - had to take 2 days off instead of the 1 planned because I'm having some problems with my left knee. It feels like it gets knocked out of place or something; lots of muscles around my hip and front/back of knee will pull a lot. Gonna call Paul tomorrow, as for now playing it by ear.

    By the way y'all, I'm starting to get really used to 3 day weekends with a mandatory Saturday beach day. You guys will have to be a serious support group for me when school starts and I don't have that anymore. If I get depressed or start hurting people I'm really sorry.

  9. 8 miles.

    Took a few days off per doctor's orders. Car wreck hurt my hips and held me back one more day from running. That's all better now though.

    Now I'm trying to start back easy again in the new shoes,insoles, and heel lifts. I'm still keeping hope.

    One a good note, biking and core work is going swell. I'm taking the Brandon Lasater approach to biking. Managed to keep 26+ mph for about 30 minutes on the stationary bike yesterday.

    Visited the ATL Tuesday morning and had a nice run with Alex!

    Also, in celebration of the SUPERMOON last night, I went on a midnight run on a moonlit path. It was so pretty!!

  14. 15.0 miles, 98 minutes, 8500 feet...fortunately I avoided becoming another victim of the infamous Magnolia Road (or Mags as I am now allowed to call it) this morning. It was a great run, filled with pain. Every uphill, I was saying to myself.."I wish I had Wegener's calves." The rest of the week was just dandy. Ran a pleasant and smooth 5 mile mini tempo in 27:47 on Friday. Adding foot drills to the daily routine to help out my shins and feet. Nothing really exciting happened this week, just work and running. All I do is stand in the front of the store and "engage" people for like 6 hours, so boring. Hey coach, is it still beneficial if I do the fartlek workouts on hills? oh and 43 last week.

  15. 32 for the week. Runs have been feeling a lot better, but I need to be more patient with the pace as I try to build back aerobic base. Once I can take easy days a little easier, I think I'll be much more confident about my aerobic fitness. Otherwise, everything is feeling great! I've had a lot of solid strength workouts too and that's always a plus.

  16. 42 miles last week for me. The weather was pretty optimal during the first half of the week but got a little warmer in these last few days. All my runs went well and I was especially happy with a progressive run on Friday that I ended up finishing with a pretty quick average pace. I've been keeping myself busy outside of running with camp activities such as sailing, tennis, and manual labor. Kept up with my core and mobility work as usual!

  19. 29 miles for the week. My lower legs aren't as sore, but I wasn't as disciplined with my recovery on Friday and Saturday of this week as I need to be. I'm paying for that now with a little heel pain. I'm not too worried about it because its part of the ups and downs I'm supposed to experience in getting back but its a reminder that I can't afford complacency.

    Right Achilles and knees were weird/ stiff in mornings & during runs Sunday through Wednesday. Conservative week. Started feeling better on Friday. Felt great and strong on long run yesterday, but still really tight.

  21. I've taken to the trails to save myself from the monotony that is suburban America. However, these trails pose their own dangers. By sparing myself from mind numbing boredom on the roads I ventured to Durbin Creek Preserve. Just call it Jurassic Park. Horse flys the size of pterodactyls swoop in at every turn to try and eat me. Roots as large as T Rex rib cages attempt to break my ankle on every step. My only defense is running with a spray can of Off bug spray and high stepping like I'm Chad Ochocinco. 5 touchdowns and a field goal on the week. I converted on all the extra points.

    And JG: Don't get discouraged. It takes years of toe running to get that kind of girth on your lower legs.

  22. Well I don't think I'm ever going to be able to be one of the first posters, I work late on sundays and then come home to roll into bed. Mileage for last week was a little short, I was exhausted and figured dead legs and little sleep would do me no good. 24 miles for the week

    I'm a little worried about Allison. The way she nonchalantly suggested she might start hurting people when we get back to school is a little alarming. Could we try to train her to only hurt the pride of our opponents on the cross country course?

  24. At first glance I saw the W in Wyatt and TWO WHOLE WORDS accompanying the comment. Thought it was from Wout and almost died...
    30 miles for the week! I've taken to trail exploration too! But the things I've encountered have been three narrowly dodged butterflies, one particularly squareular turtle who disappeared into his shell, and a buncha cyclists that keep smiling and moving over. No carnivorous horse flies here. Excited to try out tempo runs soon!

  26. 42 for the week, getting caught in the rain for the first 5 minutes of a run and then having the sun shine can make one upset. Summer showers are always the best in the mountains, all are welcome to come run with me in Pickens!
