first week of practice

It's finally here! Hopefully all are getting settled in and taking care of the many things demanding your attention. In the shuffle, do your best to make sure you getting the right amount of sleep. Also, pay close attention to the list of important dates you received! The big ones though are:

Sunday - physicals
Monday - NCAA Compliance meeting
Tuesday - team meeting
Wednesday - first official practice!

All of you should have received the new calculator to be used at least through September, so make sure as you begin the new week on Monday that you are using the correct calculator for your daily miles. The pattern for this week is:

Monday- light aerobic running
Tuesday- free-form fartlek (short & fast segments for all men & women)
Wednesday- aerobic running
Thursday- medium long aerobic running
Friday- aerobic running
Saturday- threshold running (cut-down run)
Sunday- long aerobic running
(EDIT: EC for this week is 2 x 15' + 2 x 30')

Moving forward, you should note that the new calculator included a new weekly pattern for race weeks and non-race weeks. For race weeks, Tue & Sat are the hardest days, with a long run on Sun; for non-race weeks, Tue & Fri are the hardest days, with a long run on Sunday. Monday will be your lightest day each week.

Lastly, Tue & Fri will vary from week to week as to which is fartlek/interval oriented and which is tempo/threshold oriented.

See you very soon!

Got my 68 miles in for the week. The first couple of days this week were pretty rough. It was hot, humid, and I think I was feeling the previous high mileage weeks finally. Overall got a 5 mile tempo in at 28:21, a 10 mile fartlek, and a 15 mile long run at the river up the widowmaker. It's good to be back on campus and gettin to see everyone again.

This week was better than last week but I was still unable to get in the total scheduled mileage. I got 39 in. I didn't run on Wednesday because I was in the car all day coming to Atlanta and then I had to cut Thursday short because my legs were still feeling the long drive. Besides those two days everything was good, including Saturday's long run.

72 for the week plus 2x15' and 2x30' EC runs. like joe, monday and tuesday were a little rough. i intended to do a fartlek effort similar to the past few weeks, but had to cut it short due to a certain amount of "intestinal distress" (as opposed to ian turnbulling the run). tuesday i just took it easy as it was hot and humid. i hit my stride by wednesday and managed a solid tempo run with austen- 6 miles in 33:51, even pace the entire way. 17 on saturday and felt great, after an entire summer i finally made widowmaker my bitch. it was good seeing more familiar faces down at the river, and im looking forward to the big crowd at practicec.

Got my 48 in for the week plus 2x30 min e.c. runs. Overall good week, the fartlek on Monday was pretty solid with the shorter reps. Tempo was pretty good for the most part, and had a pretty legit 10 miler saturday with the girls. getting to Tech was awesome. Love the team so far, cant wait to get into season wednesday.

55 plus a 30' EC run for the week. Running with people this week made all the difference. If I felt like crap, I guess I didn't notice, so I can only assume that I felt pretty good this week. It was great to run with my teammates again :-D Didn't have a good tempo this week, but everything else was good. See you guys this week at practice/meetings/etc.

Had to move all of my stuff into my apartment, so that took multiple trips in my small 1988 toyota camry with no air conditioning. So I was driving in 90+ heat and who knows what humidity making trips. Well that was my Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday I set up my room and noticed that the air conditioning in the apartment was not working so I got very little sleep with as hot as the apartment was.
But I still had a solid week. I ran 82 miles. Had a good tempo Wednesday morning, although I went into it dehydrated and tired from a night of no air conditioning. Ran 9 miles in 51:14~5:41 pace, and had a good long run of 16.5 miles at Kennesaw.
It seems to me there are always reasons, or excuses, for having a bad week-not hitting mileage, not doing well on a workout, etc. Some reasons are legitimate-i.e. injuries, deaths in the family, illness. Some are not. I am not calling any of my teammates out. I am just saying, ask yourself how much collegiate running means to you and whether or not your excuse for having a bad workout or not hitting mileage is legitimate.

40 this week. 4 short but still a miracle because I took Monday off for my achilles, Wednesday it thunderstormed from 3pm on, and Saturday was the second day of hell since the drive down did NOT go smoothly. Anyway, my long run was probably the best I've had all season. My tempo ended up being 3.5 miles, but I think it was pretty solid. The end of the week felt really bad, maybe from doubling a couple days to make up that mileage. I'm so excited to be back and see everybody!!!!

Got those 39 this week. Had a horrid long run. (Thought I was gonna die) But the next run was real solid. Ran 3x1000 meter hills at Trebble mill for my fartlek/interval and then did 4 mile tempo.

Down week with only 66 miles. Between the last week of work, which turned into like a finals week, and packing up and moving back to Atlanta, I found myself in a few situations where the only point in going running would have been for the number I report on the blog. I would have just gotten more worn down by it rather than reaping benefits...Hard for me to admit that one to myself, but I'm glad I did looking back at it.

With that said, I'm very glad to be back in Atlanta, and training is much better and consistent since I've been back. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting the new faces in the next few days.

I had a solid 49 this week. I had a mediocre Monday fartlek, but a wonderful Wednesday tempo. I moved in on Thursday and had fun wandering around campus all weekend. I mapped out a ten mile loop of the five points area and ran that on Saturday afternoon. It's a lot of fun meeting all kids of new people, I'm loving GT so far.

Had a rough week only got in 40 miles I missed 2 days. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I was driving back from the beach and moving in so to say the least I was pretty busy those few days. I was able to get in 10 on tuesday to kinda make up a bit for missing the runs on Monday and Wednesday. Can't wait for a great week to start up and looking forward to saturday.

Sorry I never posted last week, but I was up in SC and did not have any cell service or internet. Well the week before I went 60 miles. I did some pool running because my shins were really bothering me. I went on the tempo run with pprc that wednesday and then did part of my long run with Billy and DJ before I left for the beach. Last week my shins were really bothering me so I only got in 40 out of the 57 miles, but instead of running I rode my bike at a pretty solid effort for 45 minutes four of the days. I took off Saturday so that is why I did not hit my target. My run yesterday my shins felt the best they have in weeks so hopefully it keeps up.

Sorry about missing last week's post. I hit 27 last week (with 2 water runs) and 32 this week. Not exactly blowing my training out of the water, but I think the stress reaction in my left foot is about healed now. Next week I am going to start slowly bringing my mileage back up to where it needs to be. Love being on campus and getting to run with the team, can't wait for practice to start!
