cruisin' the caribbean

During a great week on a cruise ship (11 laps to a mile track!), I was able to finally finish the book 'Highest Duty', the story of Captain Sully who successfully landed his disabled jetliner in the Hudson River in NYC, thus miraculously saving the lives of all those aboard. At one point in the book, Captain Sully referenced a Hopi Indian poem:

There is a river flowing now very fast,
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid,
They will try to hold onto the shore.
They will feel they are torn apart and will suffer greatly.
Know the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river,
Keep our eyes open, and our heads above water.

I read the poem and thought what a great philosophy on life. Life at its best is found out in the fast-moving rapids at the middle of the river. And we can't be afraid to let go of the secure shoreline. Just let go, ride the rapids, keep your head up, and keep moving forward - the river, and life, will take you where you need to go.

Then I realized something else. And I wanted to say congratulations to every one of you. For you have already let go of the shore and put yourself out into the deep, swift water at the middle of the river ... academically, you did that the minute you decided to attend Georgia Tech!

Take that same courage, that same heart, and that same 'give me your best shot' attitude and employ it in all facets of your life. Particulary, bring all that to your running, to your athletic efforts.

I hope the first aerobic fartlek effort went well last week, that the right effort was found. Along with the long run and the aerobic fartlek, this week brings the addition of your first 80% run on Friday. Again, use the pace chart to determine a ballpark pace, then learn what the effort feels like and manage it well throughout the run. Don't forget to warm-up with an easy mile and cool-down with an easy mile.

And don't forget to spend some time stretching, along with your core and general strength development.

36 for the week Coach!
It appears as if you got you a tan in the Caribbean. Hope it was fun! Running was awesome this week. My entire family rodes bikes one day while I ran. It was great. I like the poem. It reminds me of white water rafting. I did that this week too. "Give it all you got. You only live once."

54 miles for the week. Felt great this week! 11.5 on Sunday at about 6:30 pace, then ye'old 5-4-3-2-1 fartlek mid-week, and then tonight I did a 5K in Knoxville as a tempo run (to count for this upcoming week), but I felt really good, so I ended up getting 1st in my age group with a 15:57. I think running in the early morning helps a ton compared to last year (J-bird's advice).

And that cruise looks like fun.

Hope everyone has a happy 4th of July!

Got 41 in last week! Went to Oxford on Saturday and did a nice run by the river! Oh, and on my long run Sunday, I ran into Paula Radcliffe in a random cow field!!!! For being 7 months pregnant, she still looks great (and fast!). I was SO inspired I subconsciously picked it up quite a bit for the second half. What an experience!!!!!! ahhhh! Hopefully more Olympic sightings to come ;)

38 miles in 5 days of running. This week is going to be really tough to get my running in also, but I'll try my best. If I can't hit my milegae, I'll at least make sure the quality of my mileage is good. Also, I might not have internet till next week, so sorry if my post is late again.

AND I MISS BEING ABLE TO BUY LARGE BAGS OF ICE FOR ICE BATHS! that is the first thing I'm doing when I get home.

About 35 this week. I got a little off pace with a virus and a twisted ankle but I'm running really well now. I had a nice peachtree road race as a slow tempo and ran a 37:40. It felt really good.

40 for the week before and 37 for this past week.... I had a rough week with tests so that's why I'm short on mileage.

45 last week. I was in the Bahamas on vacation so I had a rough time with the heat, but I survived and hit my mileage. I also stumbled upon Coach vacationing with his family, so we got caught up and hung out in the sun for an afternoon. Glad to be back in South Carolina where it's "cooler."
