dog days of summer

The dog days of summer are certainly upon us. High heat and high humidity offer a challenging environment to prepare for the fall season. The Sept '11 issue of Runner's World has a good article discussing the topic, pick it up and read it if you can. Obviously we know it's smart to avoid running in the heat of the day and to stay well-hydrated at all times. But the article also mentions some other points to keep in mind, such as an approximate 20% difference in volume compared to training in cooler and dryer environments. For example, running 50 miles for a week in high heat and humidity is equivalent to 60 miles a week in a cooler and dryer environment. Also, keep in mind you will need to adjust the pace of your runs - you will be slower for easy runs, threshold runs, and long runs. Don't worry, you will see the positive result on some early morning practice when a cool front comes through in mid-to late-September. So, just focus on making sure the runs feel the right effort, and don't stress about what the watch says.

In less than three weeks we will be gathering as a team - I hope you are excited!

56 for the week. Was a very up and now week. Had an awesome 11 miler at the river for my long run, best fartlek of the summer, as well as the best tempo of the summer(6 miles in 34:58), but my easy days were kind of rough. A little calf trouble popped back up this week, but luckily meeting at Tech to run everyday gave me the opportunity to meet with paul and get some stretches and exercises to do. Definitely felt better as the week ended.

Just a little side note...Joe Stowe, Mark, DJ, and I are local celebrities now after making the homepage of the AJC website!

59 on the week. Had a killer long run and my best fartlek of the summer, but then died on my tempo a bit. The mileage started hitting me pretty hard towards the end of the week. Can't wait to be back in Hotlanta in 3 weeks!

58 this week. The legs are handling the slightly higher mileage just splendidly. I definitely noticed the Georgia heat this week though.

Core workouts are good too. I've added the "6 inches" drill into my plank session.

41. I went to a massage therapist Saturday but it didn't seem to help. I've had to run super slow and not very much just to avoid walking...

40 a week ago, and 46 this past week. Why is it so doggone hot? Hot at 7am and 5pm!

Week of July 24-30: 43.5 in 6days felt pretty good, just some soreness... R Hip was out then just sore for last few weeks but no longer slows me down... still working on getting my ankles and knee lift undercontrol... I met up with Austen at the river and hung with him for 3mi around 6min pace but my cardio was not ready for that speed... taught me that I can go faster than I thought though!

I am so ready to be motivated by teammates rather than just the watch and the Hot sun rising!

P.S. I mixed 1:4 BluePoweradeMix:YellowGatoradeMix and got a taste IDENTICAL to 'PoweradeGreenSquall' (very good taste in my opinion :)

38 miles (for missing week)
46 miles this past week

Little concerned having some random throbs in Ach. I'll go see good ol Paul about that!

CRIMINAL UPDATE: I am no longer a fugitive on the run. =) Went to court for my "failure to use sidewalk" during run ticket and got 15 hrs. of community service rather than $265 fine =)) Will def. be using the sidewalk from here on out! Counting down the days!

60 solid miles for the best week of the summer so far. Pictures are supposed to be worth a thousand words, but I think they are only worth about 50 of my scrupulously chosen lexical jewels. The turnout for both the fartlek on the track Tuesday and the tempo at the Lake Loop Of Torment Friday were impressive. Conditions for the tempo were better than average at about 74 degrees at 7:30am. Cameron, Mark, and I beasted a negative-split 6 mile spread in 34:57-58. Dj just showed up one day for his centerfold. 31 for the week - barely half of what the calculator says :( I'm still having really annoying hamstring/knee attachment issues. The massage last week made running possible (just walking at work was hurting before it), so I'm hoping this week's massage will cure it completely...would love to be able to feel an increase in mileage, but right now I'm only feeling the humidity - heat index was 119 in VB last weekend!! Can't wait to see/meet everyone :)

57 took a day off due to traveling. Sorry for the late post. Felt tired all week even though I'm getting sleep. I'm messing with my diet we'll see if it helps.
