team cohesion and team achievement

Sitting in a dorm room preparing for the first of three weeks of camp in the mountains of NC, there's only time for a quick post.  In the recently released book, "Eleven Rings - The Soul of Success", great NBA coach Phil Jackson talks about how he knew the 2008-09 Lakers team had the seeds of greatness from the first day of training camp.  The team would go on to post a season-record of 65-17 and would win the NBA Championship.  One of the biggest differences Phil Jackson saw early in training camp was in star player Kobe Bryant.  From the beginning of training camp that year, Kobe made a great effort to connect more closely with his teammates.  In prior years, Kobe made little effort to spend time with his teammates.  Jackson credited Kobe's effort as a major factor in forging a more cohesive team focused on something bigger than themselves, understanding that "what we achieve is bigger than what you can achieve".

The challenge for each of us is to think about what we as individuals contribute in the area of team cohesion.  What efforts are we making to connect more closely with our teammates? And, are we as individuals more committed to the team achievements than we are to our own achievements?

Lastly, this is our last week of just easy aerobic running.  The following week you should begin using the aerobic conditioning schedule contained in the summer notes.  If you want to however, you could do an aerobic speed fartlek workout this Tuesday as a little extra credit and to get a little jumpstart on the training schedule.

62, 6 days.

I've previously mentioned to the guys to focus on getting/staying healthy through these summer months, but something I didn't mention or take into account was the heat. I'm a little surprised Coach hasn't posted on the blog about it yet, but it should be common sense (and is actually mentioned in the training schedule everyone has) to try to avoid running in the heat as much as possible. If you don't have an option, be it your work schedule, etcetera, then remain mindful of the effort of your runs/workouts. I'm sure a lot of you are on the east coast and are dealing with this heat wave (sorry Greenwald, I'm not sure how Colorado is, but this may apply to you also), so as you start the fartlek and 80% efforts, be aware of how you feel and don't force the issue. A reaction to the heat could set you back like an injury. We want to return to school fit and healthy.

47. Ran a 5k on July 4th. Due to old lightweight trainers and tight calves I had to stop 3 times to stretch them out on my way to a 17:32. I was pissed for the better part of the day until I looked at my watch. I forgot to start it on the line so when I stopped to stretch and "stopped" my watch I actually started a split. I ended up getting the total stretching time instead of running time. Turns out I stopped to stretch for a grand total of 2:07.65. So my 17:32 was actually a 15:25 with breaks. Not too shabby. Oh and I closed my last 200 in 27.

37, 6 days had a good time at the Peachtree RR, saw Cam, Chance, and hs teammates and coaches there. Also had a few good rain runs with Allison and others! Also...the Yellow River Game Ranch IS NOT the same cute little animal sanctuary that we remembered from elementary school field trips. Beware.
If you're a freshman post your last name too so we can find you on facebook!

Jk don't post your last names, Coach Megesi got it!

48. Only got lost once. Doing everything I can to keep these shins in check. That's a good piece of advice Patrick. Colorado is hot, but not nearly as humid as Virginia or Georgia. I moved in with some CU guys this week. Alec, my friend Blake Theroux LOVES League of Legends, so I challenged him for you. So don't lose!
Also, I'd be interested to know some other aerobic workouts that people like to do on Tuesdays...besides the 5-4-3-2-1.

36. Shins were really sore this week. I think mostly from running on pavement and cobblestones. But, back to Brussels now and there are trails in a park nearby. Met a running group in the park today, first time all summer I didn't have to do my Sunday long run solo!

4 miles! Everything feels good and its great to be back running again! Went to the Yellow River Game Ranch with Morgan, Hayley, and Christina on Saturday...we got chased by peacocks!

50 miles last week with Monday off to start the alternating Monday running schedule. The updated core work is continuing to be successful as well. I have been maintaining a good balance between morning and evening runs to mitigate the mild heat Northern Michigan is experiencing and have given special focus to striding this week, along with recovery as usual. I hope everyone had a good Independence Day and is excited about starting some more intense aerobic efforts on Tuesday and soon on Fridays!

36 last week. I've been just a few over mileage for a while since I didn't take time off after track but I think I'll start to settle back into plan in the next few weeks.

I took a spontaneous trip home to the A after work this past Wednesday and got to see several wonderful teammates. Ran a rainy 6 at KM with Morgan and "others" aka Hayley and Christina - Major props go to Christina who BALLED THE FREAK OUT and ran the whole thing with us. She should be a distance runner, just sayin. Then on Saturday I got to run some nasty hills with the lovely Sammie K around our stomping grounds of Marietta.
Best trip home ever! <3

38. Went to Charleston Wednesday through Sunday. Apparently nobody there believes in shade. Had some pretty terrible runs. I tried to run on one of the Citadel's old cross country courses except the bugs literally attacked me. Like 30 of them were just flying at me and following me. I was running with my boyfriend and he had to run behind me just to swat them off. It was a pretty horrible experience. Not sure why they didn't bother him. Also not sure how people can possibly race there.

36.2 millas para mi. Killin the game right now. Ran Peachtree on Thursday as my first strong aerobic effort of the summer, things went pretty well! 34:46 (Peachtree PR) feeling pretty smooth. The only thing more impressive than my epic ensemble was the fact that I dropped a 5:15 on mile 3 and shrugged it off like it was child's play. Caught a wide array of GT representatives as well!
Alums: Coach Johnson, DJ, Felicity and Hickey.
Current members: Chance and Morgan.
Upcoming members: Wit and Andres

sorry if I forgot anyone...

8 this week. On Tuesday, after taking a week off, I tried to run 2 and was still in pain. I iced/heated/took more meds for the next couple of days and biked a ton. I left campus and went with my fam to Big Canoe for the weekend, but luckily there was a nice workout facility nearby. On Friday I woke up with no pain whatsoever, so I decided to be daring and went for a 3 mile run on a soft, flat track located near my cabin. I made it through with no pain at all! And the pace wasn't embarrassingly slow either... in fact I shockingly kept a 7:30 the whole time. In my defense I thought I was going 8:10 (yes I am the world's worst pacer). Anyway I was so excited that I decided to do the same thing Saturday morning. Probably not the wisest choice, but I made it through again with little pain, same distance and pace (I repeat, I am an awful pacer). Took today off and biked a lot... looking forward to being able to run a lovely Sunday long run very soon. Hope everyone had a great 4th!

40 for the week, not really enjoying the rain this past week, it did cool things off however. Everything is going really smooth, while running in the mountains, people give you the craziest looks while you run up them.

You were in Big Canoe?! I work there actually (golf course) and I live about 15 minutes away! What did you think of it?

took my first "every other monday off" this week, ran 34 miles. Feeling good after a good long run this morning in the sweltering heat and humidity that is currently Geneva. Freshman - I'm Rachel, going to be a Junior ISyE major and I'm from Chicago! I can't wait to (re)meet all of you and welcome you onto our wonderful team in just a little over a month! Feel free to post anything about yourselves that you think we'd want to know! For example Katie Townsend's dinner of choice is Spaghetti-every night. Also YAY FOR CAROLINE WHO IS RETURNING TO RUNNING :) :) :) I'm really missing the ice bath in the training room right now, something about homemade ice baths that just don't quite live up to the silver pool of foaming, ice cold water and sitting in it with all of your teammates. I hope everyone had a great celebration of the USA's birthday and that we can all enjoy our last week of the easy stuff before workouts start!

15 miles. ankle has acted up on and off for the week and there was a lot going on during the week so I had trouble finding time to run later in the week.

I did go the Paris Diamond League meet which was awesome. I saw a sub 44 400, a sub 8:00 3k steeple. Manzano got third in the 1500 with a crazy last lap to finish in 3:33. Dibaba also crushed a 14:23 5k.

I also saw Usain Bolt and holy crap, when he comes into the stadium or if they show his face on the screen the entire stadium just explodes. And when he won the 200, the flock of photographers that instantly swarmed him was massive.

Also, whenever a high jumped/pole vaulter/long jumper started the attempt, the entire 50,000+ people in the stadium would do the slow clap for their run up. It was seriously something the else to be at a track meet like that.

Now I can't wait for Monaco, hopefully that 5k American record will go down.

18 miles last week. Fully healed from my little injury speed bump a week ago. I feel great and I will be shooting to hit high 20's for mileage this week. I'm looking forward to the 80% runs next week. Thanks to Christian for getting me a peachtree number last minute and running it with me. It was a lot of fun.

34.5 with a day off! A little ass kid biked alongside me towards the end of Sunday's long run and helped keep the pace chipper :). ALSO I CAN DO 8 CHIN UPS ON THE FIRST SET NOW! Not a vital life skill but it wowed some gym rats. Yeehaw.
Melissa I just looked it up, holy guacamole your South Carolina bridge is quite a bridge. Allie come home for good soon!!
To everyone who's getting the blues from all the rain, "where I come from, rain is a good thing!" Props if you know the song.

21 miles for me over 5 days. I can't tell if my achilles bursitis is gone or not, but most of the pain seems to feel like tendonitis. My leg loosened up a mile into my run yesterday and then felt great for the next few miles (until I stepped in a huge puddle). I'll keep up with my stretching and icing. Followup doctor's appointment in 10 days.

JWEG sounds like you had a nice Wegener easy run on Thursday.

Killa Cam how'd that giant hill after the 3 mile mark feel? I normally run the 6th mile at that pace, but the 6th mile is also downhill.

Drew that sounds awesome! Especially for the vaulters/jumpers.

2 miles for the past week.
Legs felt pretty bad early in the week and there was some weird popping sound in my knee. Realized I was way too tight..so with the help of a painful session with Robin and an introduction to Phil Wharton's Active Isolated Stretching Routine (compliments of Greer) legs are feeling way better now.
Hope everyone had a great 4th of July.

33 for the week, sadly had a lot of treadmill running since the waking hours I wasn't working were thunderstorms. Yesterday was a gorgeous Florida day however, and the best long run I have had all summer. Still no hills to be found, but there is plenty of sand. I might attempt my first beach run next week, I have lived close to the beach for 10 years and have never attempted a beach run.

I'm glad everyone safely completed and competed in the Peachtree RR!

Spent last week in Osaka and this week is in Kyoto. Osaka was so hot and humid compared to Misawa. I was definitely struggling on my runs. And I saw some of the Japanese running in long sleeves and pants! Even Mary Kate wouldn't be wearing tights in this weather. I just kept telling myself that they weren't running as fast or as far as me. The little things that you tell yourself to get though a run...

P.S.
I miss powerade.

21 miles for this past week. Ran the Peachtree and paced my little brother to break 50. He was very proud of himself. I felt great and am very glad that pacing him prevented me from running the last couple miles like an idiot. Instead it was a very nice training run. I am enjoying getting back into things but I keep procrastinating with my core.

I don't know, 20ish? My gps watch is dying and I'm not super motivated to keep track. Townsend: your boyfriend is a jerk, the bugs in charleston are nasty in the spring/summer but they always follow the leader of a pack and attack their head. Nat: glad to hear you're emphasizing the strides ;). All: keep living like a clock and such.
