Time to switch gears a little and enter a new phase of training...aerobic short specificity.
Aerobic, because we want to stay aerobic, not anaerobic
Short, because the repetitions will not be long
Specificity, because generally repetitions are at 6k/8k goal pace
We're just trying to get used to running a faster pace again and you will need complete recovery between repetitions, so do not start another rep until fully recovered from the previous one. The short repetitions combined with the long recoveries will prevent the build-up of any oxygen debt.
Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday stay the same as previous weeks. The only exception would be Thursday where you could substitute 6-8 short (~10") hill sprints with a walk-down recovery for the 6-8 x 80m fast strides, if you want to. Tuesday and Friday now become, for the most part, fartlek type workouts.
For this week:
Tue: 8-10 x 1' @ either 6k or 8k goal pace with 3' easy recovery
Fri: 5' + 4' + 3' + 2' + 1' @ ~85% effort w/ equal time recovery @ ~65%
For the women to determine their 6k pace, figure out your 5k pace in terms of minutes per mile, then add about 3 seconds. For the men to determine their 8k pace, figure out your 5k pace in terms of minutes per mile, then add about 10 seconds. These are off your XC 5k GOAL pace, not your current race pace.
For the 85% and 65% efforts, choose a CURRENT 5k time from the pace chart that you are confidant you could run right now, then look at the 85% and 65% columns for that 5k time. You should adjust your times slower if your are running in hot and/or humid conditions.
Lastly, read the Tolstoy quote above...patience and time are always important, but certainly so at the beginning of a new phase. Do not work too hard too soon! #TSN1920

44 miles last week - all felt very good. Another good and quick long run today but felt smooth/comfortable. Due to some miscalculations, I went like 12.5 instead of 11 but oh well.
Went to Amsterdam this weekend and that was awesome. Never been anywhere like it. Walking through the red light district in broad daylight was definitely an interesting experience. Also last week, not to ~flex~ or anything, ya boy made the @gtcheerleading insta story *eyes emoji*
Got the British Open Golf Tournament in Ireland this weekend so running will be kinda tough. Gonna run Monday and take Saturday off. Might need to switch around workouts or something idk there will be gametime decisions to be made.
51.5 miles last week. I was responsible for the miscalculations above ^. My stomach was bothering me until about 6 miles in the long run today but got rolling the last 7. Also finally got a half marathon time on my Garmin (had 13 on the day and went the extra .1). Got to see Willy White and go on a run with him Saturday in London too which was fun.
Excited to chain together some (relatively) high mileage weeks these next couple weeks. Thinking back to this winter, I had some of my best workouts after a training block where I went ~8 weeks averaging 50 or so miles so I'm super excited to get in another block of 50+ mile weeks. Recovery, sleep, and nutrition will def be more important than ever now that workouts are starting back up though.
As Dave mentioned this week will be a bit hectic schedule-wise. Makes it much easier to get it done, though, when you know that the rest of your teammates are doing the same and you're in it together.
58 miles last week. The buildup is definitely taking its toll on my body, as it usually does, so I'm gonna be a bit cautious as we step up one last time and start up workouts. I admittedly might not have listened to Tolstoy quite enough with some of my long runs the last couple weeks and I'm feeling it now. Excited for some workouts to break up the monotony a bit though. Always tough to wake up before work or run after a long day. I've still been reading Running with the Buffaloes so I'll give you all a quote that maybe can influence our prerace routine in the new season:
"The University of Montana huddles a couple of boxes down to the left in front of the starting line and offers a scary cheer. 'Motivate! Motivate! Oh, ah, gonna kill somebody! Oh, ah, gonna kill somebody!'"
I think that would let our competitors know that we're ready to take some souls. Or we can take the Wetmore approach and let our legs do the talking. Thought it was hilarious though.
45 big ones last week. An hour of biking and another successful Saturday of dominating the courts. Probably going to stop attending soon because it's highkey a drive and I'm truly growing tired of having no one to challenge my jump shot. I just cant't miss. Body is feeling pretty good overall this summer. Looking forward to getting in some workouts and getting a little change of pace.
60 miles last week and an hour of biking. My body is feeling good going into this week and I'm looking forward to the workouts.
46 miles last week and 90 minutes of cross training. Feeling really strong on runs so that’s been nice. I’m driving up to Atlanta to visit my peeps this weekend and couldn’t be more excited. Not sure if I’m excited to see my friends or just excited to have people to run with again ;)
60 miles! I’ve also been swimming 60-90 minutes a week. I don’t know about Matson but I’m feeling 22
42 miles last week, ran without a shirt for the first time in a month this week... I've never been pale in July, but there's a first time for everything
45 miles + 25mins on the bike. I got a fight when a wallaby hopped across my path during long run
62 miles last week. Ran on a treadmill on Saturday because of Hurricane Barry. Had to run into his wind for a few miles early on in my long run, but ended up having a great first full volume long run. Can’t wait to kill people in XC @Mike. And good to hear from Ellen, because I too am feeling 22.
57 miles last week and 9 miles of hiking. I haven't been putting cross training on the blog, but I have been biking and/or hiking 2-3 hours each week.
Some friends and I hiked two 14ers this weekend. The views were incredible!
42 miles last week (a little short Bc of traveling to Vermont)+ lots of construction work tearing down walls (that’s gotta count for something right?)! Loving the cooler weather up here for runs, but pretty tired from all the work we have been doing! Trying to stay rested and not over do it!
40 miles this week + cycling. Very short since I wasn't able to run yesterday. I was supposed to meet up with Rebecca to long run yesterday morning but overslept, then found out shortly after waking up that my grandmother was in the hospital. She is doing better now but it was definitely a very scary day yesterday. :( On a brighter note, I'm excited to do some rust busting this week with the workouts (though a little nervous because I still don't know how to pace very well) and excited to see Atlanta United on Wednesday! Hopefully they'll be able to get their act back together and break their losing streak. Down with the dynamo!
Only 20 miles last week because I’ve been sick. I was really hoping I just had a little stomach bug but since I’ve been sick for over a week now I’m thinking I must have eaten something with gluten crosscontamination. I’m starting to feel better and I had a pretty good long run yesterday so I’m excited to get back to a full week of training this week!
59 miles last week. First 15 miler went well yesterday. I'm excited to get back to Atlanta soon.
53 miles last week, excited to start workouts. Running alone is becoming more and more boring. Wish I was not the only collegiate runner from my area. I have a running camp up in Blue Ridge that is coming up so I am excited to be a counselor for that.
50 miles and two hours of swimming. I definitely did too much treadmill running this week. I need to get back outside. I’m taking the MCAT for a second time on Friday so I’m pretty stressed (and will probably be running on the treadmill that afternoon) but once I’m done I can relax for the summer.
56 Miles last week. So far I think this has been my best summer training at this point of all time mainly due to the weather. If I look terrible the first week back in Atlanta the heat will be my go-to excuse for that thanks
36 miles plus 2 hours cross training. Super frustrated with this Achilles
Because of FASET, I had to catch up at the end of last week. I ended up running 46 miles last week, but Sunday was pretty spooky. I got to about mile 6 on a 10 mile run and I heard howling- not just my stomach-before-meals-howling, but COYOTE howling. Since the place I go to is a clay loop, when I run there in the mornings I can see coyote paw prints. So when I heard the ear-piercing screams of the coyotes at the moon I ran for my life. Luckily my sister bailed on the 10 miles and I was trailed by her headlights the last 2.5 miles of that run, but I was super scared. I did a lot of walking last week and I played futsal for about an hour. Does silent disco count as cross-training?
24 miles last week plus 2 hours of biking + elliptical. Running in Florida has been pretty toasty and the humidity is nearly twice as much as Cali! Should be heading back home sometime soon and looking forward to the change in training this week! - posted in the wrong week before this *facepalm
Got up to 30 last week. Megesi would be very proud of how much protein I’ve been getting in lately
53 miles last week
49 miles last week and 55 mins on bike. Had the best long run of my life and running is becoming more enjoyable.
41 miles + 90 mins cross training. summer is flying by and that is kinda scary! something else that is scary is how many tries it takes me to verify im not a robot...
68 miles last week. Made a big mistake yesterday by trying to blast my first 17 miler. Hit a WALL. Trying to be patient, but not too patient because I've only got one more time on the grass. Happy Birthday goes out to Johnny Lyons! Hope your feeling 21
50 miles last week with an hour and a half of hiking! Had to do my Sunday long run on the treadmill because of the weather so it wasn’t the most enjoyable run of my life but I did get to watch a lot of Netflix
40 miles and 90 minutes of rowing/elliptical. Got food poisoning late Sunday night but I'm starting to feel normal again and hoping for a good run today
33 miles last week. Had to try to get my weekly mileage in five days after an unexpected day off. Feeling good but landscaping is making me pretty tired for my runs.
26mi last week! excited to get to 30 this week and the first workout (woo!!). also did my first official 50mi bike ride out at the bud plant last weekend!
Only 10 miles last week. Was only able to do my long run, my mouth has been very swollen from grafting surgery so haven't been able to run since. Hoping to start running again some time this week, but unfortunately it might be a few more days ... The surgery definitely affected me more than I thought it would and I'm bummed I haven't been able to run, just looking forward to getting back into it hopefully soon.
Big fat 50 last week. Good long run on Sunday. Sope Creek in the backyard
25 miles last week Tuesday-Saturday and 90 minutes cross training - runs have been feeling good!
55 miles last week. Felt good, and had a nice Saturday run with O'Rielly in London.
50 miles this week, missed a run earlier in the week and redistributed it to the last 3 runs so I felt a bit more tired than usual for doing 12 Sunday but overall still good.
Really happy to have hit 44 miles this week, 30 mins of cross training and 120 minutes of circuits. Felt very comfortable and really enjoying increasing the mileage again.
65 miles last week. I’m excited to get started up with workouts again and get to running hard.
60 miles last week
