biology vs chemistry

In the comments section last week I referenced a talk by a coach of recent championship teams. To me, the talk could be broken down into two parts - the biology of championship teams and the chemistry of championship teams.

Regarding biology, he spoke of the importance of the long run, calling it the most important run of the week. The tempo/threshold run was the next most important workout of each week, followed by a weekly fartlek, and finally finishing one easy run each week with strides. These were the summer ingredients that led to success in the following season. Any of that sound familiar?

Far more important though was the attitude of the team, the team culture. He identified several factors that needed to be present. They included a blue-collar mentality, a willingness to sacrifice, patience and persistance, being a student of the sport, and having a real passion for the sport - you have to live for it. Basically, each team member needs to invest, seriously invest.

I think we have the biology right. And I challenge you to think about where our team chemistry is. Do we have the right formula, and what is your part in the equation?

48 in 6 days this week. Running in the mountains all week was great! I'll be glad to get away from 3 mile long uphills though...that is not an exaggeration by the way.

47 in 7 days this week. Starting to hit the roads a little more frequently has made my knees a little sore but have to get used to running in the ATL! Otherwise feeling pretty good, love stepping up the general strength!

28 in 6 days. I did 2 2-a-days of 7. My IT band still doesn't feel completely better but I think it will as I get back in shape.

50 miles for 7 days. IT bands felt a little tight this week, especially in the Tuesday Fartlek. I felt great in the Friday Tempo though. I'll be sure to stretch out a lot next week.

I searched the stores last week for Equate shakes, but couldn't find any! Does anyone know where to buy these?

Equate Shakes are at Walmart Austin

Thanks! I only checked Kroger and Publix.

53 this week. Good long run, but it took a lot out of me. Fartlek suffered a little bit as a result. Successful tempo run with Joe Stowe in the mist! Excited for the Women's World Cup Finals tomorrow!

43 for the week - was right on schedule and then couldn't run yesterday since I couldn't sleep well had to be up at 6 to go take the MCAT. I'm absolutely exhausted and pretty sure I didn't do as well as I wanted to :( But now I can make my focus sleep!! Both the fartlek and the tempo this week felt really good probably because it has been a lot cooler this weew here in VB. Miss everyone!!! Hope your summers are going well :)

53 heart-throbbing miles of aerobic passion. Endured brutal training techniques imported directly from New Zealand via a kiwi-girl (probably passed down directly from Peter Snell and John Walker). I wasn't sure sprinting up Stone Mountain was a good idea, but she made me (don't worry, didn't go far enough to go anaerobic). Joined forces with Alec Friday morning for a 5mi tempo effort in 29:53. Yellow River Park near Stone Mountain has a paved, relatively flat loop that is perfect for tempos as it is marked every 1/4mi. If you're wondering why I'm not in Japan yet, celebrating their world cup win, it's because my company is slow and submitted the wrong immigration forms way back when, so I'm still waiting...

44 this week. Wasn't the best week for me...felt pretty sluggish. Also, after 6 months of looking forward to the Taylor Swift concert it was cancelled 3 days before. And to top it off I just got back from a mini trip to the beach where it rained every day :( but other than that I am looking forward to the new season and just happy to be running!

43 miles in 5 days. Had a strong 10k tempo run on friday on some hills and felt great. I am also pleased with how far my overall strength has progressed. Overall a good week, just a little bit bummed about the World Cup...

53 this past week... i'm gonna shift some mileage around these next two weeks because i'll be heading home next wednesday and might just use my travel day as a day off.... hope everyone is staying cool... also, i strongly dislike the game of soccer, and my one and only attempt to watch it only incited anger, so it looks like i'll be stuck watching other sports that can't end in a tie

50 miles for the week felt pretty good. It wasn't quite as epic as Joe Stowe's passionate 53, because I didn't get the privilege to run with the amazing Alec "Total-Baller" Clifford. Austen "Total-Nerd" Gutierrez came to NC but decided to be a total nerd and didn't come hang out with me in Cary. Nerds are so lame I hate them.

53 this week, felt good. Had a decent fartlek and ran a 7 mile tempo at 6:03 pace. One month to go! Watch out for buzzard bait coach, it'll get ya. Just remember the old ultra-marathon adage, "start out slow, and then taper off."
