the second nutritional step in recovery

For some time now we have emphasized and been committed to the importance of nutrition in recovery.  All of us know how hugely important it is to get ~50 grams of carbohydrate and ~12 grams of protein inside the 45 minute window after practice to jumpstart recovery.  But we now need to understand and commit to the second nutritional step in recovery - the next four hours or so after practice.  Intake of carbohydrate and protein during this period is equally important.  More specific guidelines will be developed and distributed, but some information recommends consuming another ~50 grams of carbohydrate every hour for 4-6 hours after the workout.  At a minimum you must make sure you follow up the 45 minute post-workout window with a meal within two hours, and that meal should contain a significant amount of carbohydrate, along with protein.  If you have not been taking care of this second step you are not taking full advantage of the recovery process - let's commit to this important second step!

Do not buy into the misguided notion contained in much of the current popular diet/nutrition advice that carbohydrates are bad.

Sluggish days and heavy legs are not an indication that the training is too much, rather they are signs that recovery has been too little!  Very likely you have depleted your glycogen stores by not replenishing them at a high enough rate.  Think about your nutritional recovery strategy with regards to both steps of the process.  And remember that adequate hydration is also vital to the process.

For high performance endurance athletes, carbohydrate intake and hydration are crucial!

Now some important notes:
*Freshman - make sure you have 'final certification' with NCAA Eligibility Center.  Some of you are missing final transcripts from your high school and some of you have not had your SAT/ACT test scores sent directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center.
*While the specific times will be sent soon, remember these important dates:
Sunday August 18 - physicals in the AM
Sunday, August 18 - freshman athletic academic orientation in early afternoon
Sunday, August 18 - team meeting with the Compliance Office at 4:00 PM
Tuesday, August 20 - first official team practice, time - tbd

Went to the Zac Brown Concert last night. Music was great but I've never seen so many wannabe rednecks in my life.

Spending next week in Jamaica. So far my only plans are deep sea fishing and visiting Usain Bolt's home village. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Well to start, AAYYYYYEEEE OHHHHHH! And also J-Weg, don't give them any secrets about your leg speed! As for myself 48 miles last week. It was a pretty tough week as far as fatigue was concerned. Funny it happened to be this week with the post being about recovery. I can say that my recovery has slacked a little the last week or so due to a hectic work schedule and preparing for my final presentation that took place Friday. At least some good came of it though because I did well on my presentation and have an interview for a full time position next Wednesday! First interview for a full time job I might add! As far as running goes though, the workout on Tuesday was pretty tough, only managed to make 3 miles of my own makeshift workout, 200 fast(~5 min pace) then 800 steady(~6 min pace), the fatigue was real! Managed to bounce back with a smooth 9 for my medium long run on Wednesday though. Saturday was also a little shaky, but the results were much better than Tuesdays. Did a 6 mile tempo with Alec at the river to average 5:44.7 pace. The humidity was not a game there Saturday morning. Also, spotted my first snake this summer there too. All and all, just need to get my recovery back on track. No worries though!

Always and forver,

The (Lady) Killa

AYYYE OH to JWeg. Unlike You and Patrick, I had a hwopping 9 miles in 3 days. Feels so good to run again. Have had solid runs in those three days - legs felt good, but need to get my lungs back on board to training again. Seriously stoked to come back to Georgia a week from this Tuesday and (maybe) run with some other Jackets!

AYYO Jeremy!

52 with Monday off. Had a terrible return to aerobic workouts this past week. I got excited and ruined my fartlek with the first 5' stretch and the 80% run was just a shit show. I don't know. I felt fine with the mileage jump this past week, but I just couldn't keep it together Tuesday and Friday. I'll get it next week, no worries.

AAYYYYYEEEE OHHHHHH!

74 for yah boi. I flew out to Colorado on Thursday. The first 2 runs there sucked. I was huffing and puffing and killing myself to keep 7 flats going. I didn't even attempt an 80% run because the altitude was totally having its way with me. However, by Saturday, I was feeling good and Jer-bear and I knocked out a great run on the Marshall Mesa loop. The legs felt great, and I was ready to knock out a sick nasty long run. Then came the famed Magnolia Road.

To be frank, she's a bitch. The pace was all over the place, my form was slowly collapsing and I felt the cold presence of the angel of death descending upon me at 9000 feet. I managed to go a disappointing 12 this morning. I bit off way more than I could chew and paid for it dearly. But whatever. I'm amped to knock out this next week of training up here in Boulder.

Duces.

35 this week. Missed a day because of travel, but now back in Georgia!! Long run today was pretty rough. Trying to get used to the heat again. Can't wait to see everyone!!

36 in 5 days, really more like 4 days because one run got cut really short. Tweaked my quad a little on the leg circuit and took two days off to end the week, but Im feeling better now.

55 for the week, and this post could not have come soon enough! I will take all of this into consideration with my recovery from now on. I did have a "fun" Fartlek at 10:30 at night on Tuesday after I returned home from Texas after a 14 hour drive back to Georgia.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYE o JWeg

Ayo! 64. Best fartlek of my yung lyfe on tuesday. Full warmup and drills, etc. really helped. Met up with Veith on Thursday. He is doing really well in the altitude, except for today's long run... I'm leaving BOCO on Thursday. Planning on stopping in Chicago to see Liam and GoingHamm.

53 in 6 days, congrats Cam! Ayee oh Jweg! Feeling great, had a killer fartlek with Maria on Tues at Kennesaw and 6 mi 80% Fri, working up to longer workouts. Great showing this Sunday long run @mariahayleykatiekellyatom and ice baths after in the backyard!

Jweg. I salute you.

81 in 8 runs. This may be the upper limit of mileage with a full time job. Usually around the Olympic Trials marathon you hear/read about people who qualified(aka sub 220 'thon) working full time jobs running 80+ miles weeks in preparation for their races. I honestly have no idea how they do this for weeks on end if they have to sit at a desk for 8+hrs a day. I have been humbled, but definitely made some fitness gains. One more week.

10 miles last week on Saturday only. I decided to take most of last week off as a precautionary measure to ensure that my calf would not bother me at all this year. It felt a little awkward to run on early in the week but walking, biking, and lower impact activities felt normal so I was able to put in 108 biking miles last week and hopefully maintain my fitness level. As disappointing as this week was for my running, I would much rather lose one week of training in the summer than have perennial calf issues that would have plagued my running for months. There have been enough cautionary tales from injured members of the team that I felt forced to play it safe. I was still able to do all of my leg circuits and core work and iced and rolled around the clock. I think that by the time school comes around I'll be back to pretty much 100%. Despite this setback, my goals are still steadfast and my resolution to achieve them is unwavering. By continuing my uncompromising dedication to recovery, nutrition, and good sleep, along with getting my mileage back up and resuming workouts, I will be ready for the UGA meet at the end of August.

53. Tuesday's 54321 was awful...I'm pretty sure I ran a faster pace on my tempo run. I moved my tempo run to Thursday because it was cooler. It was pretty good. However, Friday and Saturday I felt awful, so I cut Friday short by 1 mile. Went to the Kenny Chesney concert and stayed with Morgan Saturday night. Then had a nice long run with Hayley, Morgan, Maria, and Kelly.

Morgan and I continue to work out together, and it's been really great to have a teammate by my side! But I think we discuss on every run how excited we are to have the entire team back together! 12 days ladies and gents, 12 days.

With Love,

Maria

38 miles on the week. Didn't have a very good 80% run but I'm moving up in mileage. For this week, I hope to break 40 for the first time this summer.

ABrack said...

40 milessss - under plan because similar to Cam I am in the final stages of work and its been a bit cray cray trying to get everything wrapped up. Also I didn't want to jump up too high in mileage after taking that week off. Should be on track to hit mileage this week though.

Only a few days left for me in hot, humid, and flat Savannah. It's insane how quickly this summer went by but I cant wait to be back with you guys! So soon!!

Only 45 in 5 because I was out at Disney and I had to take 2 days off on the travel days so that sucked.
Ready to be back and see everyone but freak classes.

59 in 6 days. Solid high mileage week. Feeling awesome aerobically. Quads were sore late in the week from all the cement pounding. Had my best tempo of the summer with Cameron but narrowly escaped being devoured whole by a snake. Luckily, it was only sunbathing.

I was at the Kenny Chesney & Zac Brown Band concert too! They were both incredible live!! Ahh!!!
After being more than a wee bit sick and having finals last week I put in a baby little 18 but still did all the strength. Back on the plan this week! Putting in a few final shifts at work and headed up to Oregon on Friday! CANNOT WAIT. Also pumped to hear about everyone's summer adventures :)
