back to work

With the new training spreadsheets sent out yesterday, a new training cycle begins for all but the handful still training and racing.  Hopefully you've had a chance to look everything over.  Two main changes from previous years are 1) an updated breakdown and color-coding of phases that more accurately reflects what we actually do as the previous spreadsheets had become out-dated, and 2) a more consistent "full volume" mileage level.  Basically we build up to that full volume week, maintain that level with consolidation weeks every 2-3 weeks, and then taper toward championships. The first phase of six weeks consists of a gradual build up to your full volume mileage week.  During this six weeks, run easily as you feel, DO NOT worry about paces, and there are no workouts.  One a week, preferably on Thursdays, do 6-8 strides focusing on being relaxed and running with good technique.  Some mobility and stretching should be included both before and after your runs.

Sleep and nutrition, as always, are integral parts of proper training.  Sleep times should be as consistent as possible and at least seven hours each night.  Nutrition should include good sources of carbohydrate, the more starches and fruit the better.  And lean protein should be included with every meal.  Staying hydrated is obviously very important.

Strength & Conditioning will be sent separately.  The summer is a great opportunity to make gains in strength, and also to strengthen weak areas.

The pace chart was included as a tab in the spreadsheets that were sent.  We'll begin to focus on the pace chart a little in the next phase, but mostly we will begin to use it extensively once we get back to school and practice starts.  The golden rule regarding the pace chart is that we ALWAYS look at it thinking about where our current fitness is...we NEVER use it thinking about what our personal bests are or what our goals are.

Lastly, at the end of the season we asked everyone individually "what do you bring to the team".  Continue to think about that question.  For those joining the team next year, consider how you would answer that question.  At some point you will very likely be asked!

Hell yeah first comment of the summer! Got in 30 big ones last week. Altitude is no joke; your boy had to tap out and end the run early at 6,000 ft on Saturday. For all the new comers to the team, welcome to the fam! Quick advice on how the blog works: when you post your mileage try and add a little something about what your doing this summer. It doesn't necessarily have to be running related. All the returners: I hope yall summers have been baller. Miss you guys!

Wassup everyone.
29 miles last week on the rough streets of Europe. Not a bad place till I fell and had to get stitches in the French emergency room...
Oh well. All healed now. Hope everyone is doing alright this summer. Big welcome to the new comers!

26 miles!!

I'm out in Humid Houston (alliteration hehe). There's this park right by my apartment that has this nice little path by the bayou. Except it's in the sun. But, every run so far I've seen a bunny so that makes it so much better. And Houston has really good Mexican food!!

Also be on the lookout for my sister, KRISTIN. She is pretty cool.

38 for me. If you guys like delicious popsicles hit me up because I am working for King of Pops this summer. I'm also doing swim team at my neighborhood pool because I'm still 18 so I can. My summer officialy started today because I got my first real sunburn.

39 miles last week for me. Last Friday I did a 13 mile, 3500ft elevation gain mountain ascent with some high school buddies. It was pretty fun, but I'm still feeling it in my quads. There's nothing like a running up a mountain to kick start summer training!

24 for me! I escaped the unbearable Floridian heat two weeks ago and went to Boston for my brother's graduation! I got to hear Steven Spielberg and Rashida Jones speak which was really cool. Also, I was lucky enough to experience a tropical storm at an outlet mall today so that was interesting to say the least.

24 miles last week! Found a great path to run on along the Mississippi River, but the wind is no joke.

18 miles for me. I went to Utah 2 weeks ago and got to do a 7 mile hike up to Lake Blanche, which is a lake up in the mountains. It was an amazing experience and a much needed break from Florida's awful humidity and heat. I'm looking forward to going back to GT and to the cold. I hate Florida @Sam Millson

12 miles last week in my first week back. Super excited about the new training plans and upcoming season and looking forward to meeting all the newcomers! So far my summer has consisted of coaching 130 kids in the art of not drowning. So far so good!

Super pumped to start training with the team and to meet everyone! Got in 45 because of some post season meets, but it's been storming pretty much the entire time I've been in St. Simons so instead of riding waves I'm riding the sofa.

15 for me last week. I haven't done anything cool yet but I'll definitely post about it when I do. If any of you newcomers are in Atlanta this summer and want to run, hit me up!

26 miles! I went to Carowinds today and it was super fun. If you ever go to Carowinds, go on Fury 325 and Nighthawk because those are the best!! Unfortunately, all of the pictures from the rides were horrible though. Excited to meet everyone!

35 dayoubs last week. Loving being back in that sweet Florida sun. There's nothing in life quite like finishing a run drenched in sweat @darosa. Welcome to all the new peeps!

18 miles and a 60 mile bike ride. I golfed 18 holes yesterday and I'm having eggs for breakfast this morning with some toast and butter. I don't drink coffee much so I'm having orange juice.

Knocked out 22 miles last week feeling like someone replaced my legs with some overcooked noodles. In the Atlanta area right next to campus, so if anyone wants to crank out some morning mileage with me, hit me up! It sucks at first, but then you have your entire day to look forward to. Seriously, best choice I have ever made.

Please... its dark...

21 miles for me last week. I'm home in Marietta and am interning in Atlanta so if anyone wants to meet up to run, let me know. Looking forward to meeting all the freshmen!

20 miles last week + an hour of biking yesterday.
May have strained my left adductor a few weekends ago, so that hurts (ice helps :)). Besides that, running feels great & I'm enjoying my peidmont park & river runs in between schoolwork.
