Just returned from NCAA's at Austin. As always, the championships did not disappoint. Hopefully you had a chance to watch. From one event to the next, some truly inspiring performances! Everyone of us should aspire to line up at the national championships, which will be back in Austin next year!
With the training spreadsheets having been sent out, below is some additional info...there are no major changes to the spreadsheet from last year. Basically we'll build up to a full volume week, maintain that level with consolidation weeks every 2-3 weeks, and then taper toward championships. The first phase of six weeks consists of a gradual build up to your full volume mileage week. During these first six weeks, run easily as you feel, DO NOT worry about paces, and there are no workouts. One day a week, preferably on Thursdays, do 6-8 strides focusing on being relaxed and running with good technique. Some mobility and stretching should be included both before and after your runs. Lastly, each week should be supplemented with one to two hours of cross-training.
Each week, starting with this one, mileage for the previous week can be reported through the comment section of the blog.
Sleep and nutrition, as always, are integral parts of proper training. Sleep times should be as consistent as possible, with at least seven hours each night, and shooting for that magical nine hours fourteen minutes! Nutrition should always include good sources of carbohydrate, lean protein, and healthy fats. Staying hydrated is obviously very important.
Strength & Conditioning will be sent separately. The summer is a great opportunity to make gains in strength, and also to strengthen weak areas. For returners, you can do the Taurus general strength circuit twice a week and squats once or twice a week.
The pace chart is included as a tab in the spreadsheets that will be sent. We'll begin to focus on the pace chart a little in the next phase, but mostly we will begin to use it extensively once we get back to school and practice starts. The golden rule regarding the pace chart is that we ALWAYS look at it thinking about where our current fitness is...we NEVER use it thinking about what our personal bests are or what our goals are.
Lastly, we'll start up the annual GTTFXC roll call soon, so make sure you take a good pic in something GT that is representative of your summer and send it to us!

28 miles last week. Found some great spots to run in Venice. Probably walked at least 20 miles as well. Got better about recovery and have been more on top of nutrition too. Ran 6 yesterday with Dave as our "long run" in Budapest. Hoping to get more sleep this week. Also will definitely get on the taurus grind cause core/upper body strength is one of my weak points. NCAAs was insane. Think my favorite race might have been the 1500. Wild.
22 miles last week and 90 minutes of cross training. Hamstring was feeling a little tight as I started back running but it’s feeling better now!!
26 miles last week and 1 hour of cross training. Also did some hiking at Devil's Backbone which was pretty neat. I'll probably start running there soon
46 miles last week and 1 hour of purposeful walking on Monday. I’m gonna start going to the gym at another intern’s apartment complex so I can get on an elliptical or something starting today! New Orleans is pretty cool, except Bourbon Street is more disgusting than anybody could possibly imagine. Had a great long run back in Baton Rouge yesterday! Even if the Tigers got swept in their super regional by FSU! #LiveLikeAClock
19 miles last week as my second week back + core/hip strength work. Walked at least 12 miles a day over the past weekend exploring Paris as my cross training (the good thing about being a frugal tourist and not paying for the metros).
23 miles last week + 2 hours of biking/ swimming + stretching/ hip strength work! Been feeling pretty good overall as I am getting back into things!
16 miles last week. My internship is fun!
30 miles last week and one hour of biking. Feeling good as I'm getting back into it.
29 miles and 30 minutes of swimming last week. There are some great paths around UL, and the weather has been favorable this week.
17mi last week, sadly no new trails, and because of the storms on Saturday didn't get up to the bud plant for a road ride :( but got on the trainer for 70min biking, and got to watch F1 qualifying with my dad so that was fun (though still infuriated with the stewards' ruling yesterday. @mike can u back me up here?!)
in other news, two fox sightings by proxy! also got to change my car's oil for the first time ever (super fun, 10/10 recommend!) and managed to not burn myself or loose the bolt in the oil pan, so basically a pro already. internship is going great and I love it a lot!
36 miles and 2.5 hours of swimming. Saw Erin and Matt at my masters swim meet on Friday (and got my butt kicked. I’m not good at swimming.) NCAAs got me fired up to train hard this Summer and be more prepared than ever in the Fall. The weather hasn’t been great in the Atlanta area recently, but we needed some rain and I don’t mind running in it a little.
13.5 miles and 2 hours of swimming and biking. Also been going to the gym 3 days a week and working on overall body strength and flexibility (Planet Fitness is free this whole summer if ur 18 and under FYI!!) Finally back in Cali and its soo nice to be home. Heading to Japan with my best friend this Friday so I'm really excited!
28 miles last week with 30 minutes on the elliptical, an hour of hot yoga, and an hour of hiking!
26 miles last week plus 45 mins cross training plus more weights and core. I've just been running in my neighborhood, which is super boring, so hopefully I'll go find some new trails this week.
12 miles the first week, 9 miles last week. I had to take this past Monday-Friday off from running because of some calf pain/tightness, but I got back on a good recovery schedule during that time, and my runs felt good again on Saturday and Sunday. I like my job a lot so far. I thought I would be working in Atlanta this summer, but instead I got sent to the company's client site, a wine distribution center in Napa, CA. Working a lot during the week and exploring a little bit on the weekends - it's been pretty good!
I ran 22 miles this past week. I just started cross training today. Last week I started taking gummy vitamins and iron pills. It’s been extremely overcast in Florida, per usual, so I try to run earlier in the mornings. I really thought it was crazy that BYU took 1, 3, & 4 in the 10k. That’s what any team wants to see in a high caliber meet. Good luck everyone competing at NBN. I find reCAPTCHA quite difficult to trick into thinking I’m not a robot. I can’t wait for the freshman rap battle.
26 miles this week with about an hour of cross training (swimming). Waking up early is taking me awhile to get used to but I can't stop the grind. Summer is fun.
37 easy miles around North Seattle. Avery got to Seattle yesterday. Divine Oduduru is my spirit animal.
15 miles and 3.5 hours biking last week
30 miles in beautiful boulder
Hola Amigos. Got 19 miles in this week. Did not get in cross training (started on tuesday). Got a pretty bad sunburn on back... Fishing in Gulf shores with my brother on Saturday on kayak and My watch clocked 11 miles of walking. Feel TIRED but good. Decided to not cross train today aswell. Mens 3000 was awesome to see Fahy get back up and win in home stretch.
25 miles and 2 hours cross training in beautiful norcross
10 miles + 2 hrs cross training. feels good to be back and working out ! North Carolina hasn't been too hot so ive been able to run home from work and skip traffic as well as get my run in !
35 mi last week and an 1 hr of biking. Not my ideal training week for nbn to say the least. I ran into some problems with a calf strain. Having to work(landscaping) only made it worse. But I'm still feeling fit and hopefully it won't matter. I'm excited to have my last two high school races with the pressure off and then take a nice break.
28 miles last week. Settling into San Francisco living. The running is gonna be much better now that Frank is here. We had a beautiful run this sunday in the mountains and hills on the other side of the golden gate bridge. Incredibly hot and not shady though. We're having temperatures in the 90s, which is pretty much unheard of here, where it's generally mid 60s in the summer. Nice to be reminded of my least favorite part about Atlanta. Can't run in the mountains and then drive 2 minutes to jump in the ocean in Atlanta though!
19 miles last week! I got sick at the beginning of the week, but I am feeling a lot better now. Went to Switzerland this past weekend and ended up hiking (more like climbing) up the wrong trail after being on it the steep incline for well over and hour! Still got a great view though!
Hi! I ran 17 miles last week, was pretty tough running again after not for 3 weeks, but I'm so excited to be back on my feet. First few days were rough because I had to run on a treadmill because we were in Rome and Barcelona, but was so happy when I cam home and was able to run on the ground again. Also did 30 minutes of biking and swimming over the course of the week and did some strides with my puppy by my side!
For some reason my post never posted... but I did 3 runs for 12 miles last week along with 21 miles of hiking - the hikes were sick! Frank came up to visit for the week and we definitely kept busy and had a great time exploring the PNW! Excited to get back into training this week!
21 miles last week. It's been such a pain trying to get this comment up I've tried like 8 times but now we've finally made it to a Marriott with decent WiFi so hopefully this one works. Will be here thru Sunday so should be able to post next week's one on time. Anyway, been feeling good about being able to fit all the mileage into the schedule and the program is supposedly slowing down a bit so we'll have plenty of time to get everything done. Running along the Danube in Budapest was pretty dope. Vienna's also really cool.
